Council issues warning to Camden residents reminding them to be vigilant when dealing with cold callers, whoever they claim to be.

The council's trading standards officers have recently received a report that a resident in a neighbouring borough was visited by someone claiming to be a trading standards officer.

This person claimed the resident had been a victim of a rogue trader and if she gave them £2500 they would ensure she got £5000 back.

This caller was not from trading standards. The council wants to warn residents that:

  • Trading standards officers do not generally cold call. An officer will usually only visit your home if you have made a complaint or enquiry to our office and a visit would have been arranged over the telephone beforehand.
  • All council officers always have identification and will show that identification when introducing themselves. Their identities can be verified by contacting Camden Council's contact centre on 020 7974 4444.
  • Trading standards officers will never ask for money.
