Does Camden need a Lidl store?
By Zara_Camden | Wednesday, September 15, 2010, 20:42
Camden has a thriving community of shopkeepers, from small greengrocers to larger chains such as Whole Foods. However despite there being a bunch of supermarkets in the local area ( a large Morrison’s and Sainsbury’s) there is now going to be a Lidl opening on Camden High Street. Day by day we can observe workmen tidying the store and stocking the shelves of the new Lidl, that will be positioned just next to Argos on the high street. Do we want this though?

A new Lidl for Camden?
I asked local shoppers what they thought of the new store, and the ramifications on the local shops.
Darren, 22 who works in PR said,’ I quite like the idea of a Lidl. At the moment on that strip of road there’s a Sainsbury’s, M&S, and Somerfield, and they’re always crazy at lunchtimes. This would be an extra option’.
Kate, 32, advertising said, ’I don’t like Lidl, I think the produce is cheap and it makes the area look less classy’.
Tina, 19, said, ‘As a student I’m happy there’s a Lidl opening, as I can use the cheaper food! The area has got so expensive lately, it’s nice to have this- and the fact that it’s right by the 99p store is a bonus!’
What do you think of the new Lidl? Let me know below.

ReportI grew up in Germany. Lidl & Aldi were both normal local shops, the produce is quality and it's a great place to shop and keep under a budget.
Their produce is a lot higher quality than brand name "value" ranges, and consistently low prices are excellent.
Having said that the range is limited and I wouldn't do all my shopping there, I also love M & S food range, although as a treat rather than daily purchases or I'd spend 3 times the amount I usually do!
I'm looking forward to being able to shop there, when does it open?
