The idea of rent-a-bike is not a new one, but one that

London has not managed to successfully implement before. The idea of going to a

pay point, paying a set sum and using a bike for x amount of hours is a simple

way for non cyclists to get active, and those with limited funds to use a bike

for x amount of hours without having to worry about maintenance. Problem is,

how will the bikes stand up to general graffiti, abuse, and the mean streets of

London?

The 30th July is the date set for this London

wide scheme to launch, and London has been showcasing the bikes at various road

shows and festivals. I went hands on with one at the recent Camden Green Fair

and was impressed with how sturdy it was, and how easy to manoeuvre.

Most of the bikes will be base in Central London but there

will be some points in Camden as well, including Doric way and Eversholt

Street. To use it you need to have registered and pay a usage fee as well as a

time fee- but the first half hour is FREE and the price goes up in small

increments.

You can check where you access a bike from using the great

Cycle Hire App, and I love the idea of these bikes getting into action all over

London- fingers crossed this scheme will take off! Here’s to a cycle friendly

summer!
