The last week has shown us Brits how incapacitating a few cm of snow can be. We’ve endured late tubes, frosty streets and started dressing ourselves like we’re journeying to the North Pole. Now the initial furore has dies down, it’s time to get savvy, and it’s a good idea to start with winterproofing your vehicle.

First off, it sound so obvious but look at whether you really to need to drive today. Yes, it might be quicker than the bus, but would it be safer to stay at home- or call in with traffic problems? Value your health!

Next up, pay attention to the road. Have a look at whether there is grit, ice or tarmac ahead of you, and judge how you drive accordingly. Avoid large piles of snow- you don’t know what is beneath it.

Refresh your knowledge of driving under icy conditions. You need to do things like use a high gear to avoid loss of control, and remember to go with a skid, rather than try and brake out of it. You can check out the Highway Code here.

Consider getting your car serviced at this time of year. You have to have it done at some time, and now you’ll know that everything is above board. Check out these Steve's garage and B G T Garage for great service with a quick turnaround time.

Store essentials in your car- you never know when thy might come in handy. Always keep a torch, blanket, spare chocolate bar and de-icer in the boot. A portable toolkit is a useful thing to have as well. You can get all these very cheaply from local shops- try the 99p store or Marks and Spencer.
